Every so often, the topic of anime recommendations comes up. And every time it does, it’s weeks later that I remember one I really wanted to endorse but failed to in a timely manner. I decided finally to make this list so that anyone who has similar tastes can hopefully find a few new titles they will enjoy.
As with anything, there are a lot of different likes and interests out there. I don’t consider myself an anime fan, I just happen to like some anime. I am using the broader term for animation, not just Japanese but others like donghua (Chinese animation) or aeni (Korean anime).
You’ll find my list below but here are the major themes of mine and it’ll give you a good idea as to whether or not you’ll enjoy items on my list.
- I tend to like darker shows, usually dark fantasy, tragedies, or supernatural and involved an anti-hero
- I like video game or virtual worlds (I believe the term is isekai)
- I’m not big into “fanservice”, I tend to like strong female leads; doesn’t mean none of these shows have degrees of that but it’s usually a negative on my list.
- I more so enjoy someone who has to grow in their abilities than start off in “godmode” or those who gain their strength by defending others.

- Berserk: The Golden Age Arc I – The Egg of the King (Berserk: Ougon Jidai-hen I – Haou no Tamago)
- Berserk: The Golden Age Arc II – The Battle for Doldrey (Berserk: Ougon Jidai-hen II – Doldrey Kouryaku)
